Hot spiced buttered rum – the best winter warmer cocktail ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ

2

Hot Spiced Buttered Rum is a rich and creamy cocktail made with rum, butter, double cream, milk, and a blend of spices, bringing festive comfort to chilly winter nights.

Recipe Intro

Hot Buttered Rum is a classic cocktail with roots in colonial America, made with rum, hot water, butter, and spices. Adding milk and double cream makes it creamier and richer, giving it a smooth, velvety texture. This transforms the drink into something comforting and warming, perfect for cold weather or festive occasions. The spiced warmth of the traditional recipe combines with a creamy twist, making it a more indulgent treat.

Hot Buttered Rum Ingredients

  • rum – use your favourite
  • butter – use unsalted butter
  • sugar – use brown sugar
  • milk – use full-fat for the best results, as the higher fat content helps the butter emulsify more smoothly.
  • spices – cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves
  • cream – use double cream or whipped cream, alternatively, you can add a scoop of vanilla ice cream for a delicious twist

How to make Creamy Hot Buttered Rum Cocktail

Traditionally, the butter batter is simmered for hours. This “batter” was then stored in the fridge, ready to be spooned into a glass and topped with rum and hot water when served.
In contrast, this version is a quick and modern take. The buttery spice mixture is simmered for just 20 minutes and is meant to be enjoyed immediately.

  • In a medium size pot add soft butter, sugar, salt, cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg. Pour in the water and whisk well. This is the base of your drink.
  • Cover and cook on very low heat for a minimum of 20 minutes.
  • Once done turn off the heat and let it cool slightly – 5 minutes is enough. Add your favourite rum and stir well.
  • Pour the mixture halfway into serving glasses or mugs, or fill slightly more than halfway if you prefer a less boozy and creamier drink. Top with hot milk and stir well.

Tip: To reduce the drink strength, add the rum immediately after removing the butter mixture from the heat, without waiting for it to cool. This allows some alcohol to evaporate, giving you a lighter, less intense flavour.

To serve: Finish with a dollop of double or whipped cream, and if you want, dust it with nutmeg and cinnamon.

You can serve this drink plain, without any toppings, or, if you prefer, get creative by adding a dollop of whipped cream for a decorative touch. Alternatively, for a decadent twist, try adding a scoop of vanilla ice cream to your glass, then pour the hot drink over it and top with whipped cream for a rich, creamy treat.
