Apart from Mozartkugel, apple strudel and Sachertorte, these delicious Wiener Punschkrapfen are one of the Austria’s signature sweets. I spent some of my childhood in Vienna but completely forgot about these yummy cakes, i recently read about them on some forum and it brought back all the memories so i had to look for it.  There are several websites that sell similar cakes with the same name, but there is only one original wienerpunschkrapfen.com. They post to Europe. I ordered 3-4 times, they post the next day and it takes about 3 days to UK. The cakes are freshly handmade and stay fresh for 2 weeks.  There is a sticker on the box with the best before date.

The cake consists of two thin layers of vanilla sponge and rich filling.  The filling is apparently made of cake pieces saturated with apricot jam, nougat chocolate,  Cointreau and/or Stroh – austrian rum.The cake is covered with a pink punch glazing.

I recently found a recipe which appears to be original or at least near original but i am yet to test it and see if this is THE real thing. (Un)fortunately i am on diet at the moment ( read – been for months and fail frequently) and i do not allow myself to make any cakes at this stage, so the recipe testing and tasting will have to wait but i am curious how it is going to turn out and how close it is to the original.

The cakes are delivered in a cute wooden box.
