I discovered Taste of London in 2006. Sadly i didn’t have camera with me at the time so no snaps from the first visit. Maybe couple of shots with my mobile phone but would need to search old files…I remember the weather was stunning, proper summer, blue sky and hot hot hot! We totally enjoyed the time, spent so much money but it was worth every penny! And since then i visited every year! They are all well “documented” so will try and post them as soon as possible.
This post is about my second visit to famous Taste of London in Regent’s Park. The weather was bad and the whole thing just did not have the same feeling as the previous year but we still enjoyed good food and drinks!
My Taste of London rating:
1 = fail – simply badly prepared food, tasteless, no effort whatsoever
2 = edible, but probably too dry or too hard, nothing special
3 = OK, simple everyday food
4 = tasty, slightly different, nicely presented, worth spending money
5 = a must! well prepared, extremely tasty, and/or great combination, something new, something you don’t get to eat often, wonderfully presented
Started with some refreshing drinks:
Tiger prawn salad was very simple but the prawns were perfectly cooked and the sauce was extremely tasty. 3/5 Lamb chops dry and chewy. 2/5
Calamari fritti – fried squid rings, very disappointing, extremely chewy, tasted OK. Blob of mayo and a slice of a lemon. i think you could get better at your corner fish and chip shop! 2/5. Risotto ai funghi – Mushroom risotto did not do any better. Watery, rice not cooked properly, they probably wanted al’ dente but this was too hard, tasted slightly better than the squid. 2/5
Galvin at Windows:
Cute presentation but that’s it. So what do you get here: white chocolate wrapped around plain biscuit base with 2 strawberries covered with plain cream and sweet sauce decorated with basil leaves… 2/5
It was great to see Michael Roux at the Taste of London and i even had a short chat with him regarding the TV program he was on a month or so before the Taste of London. Later that year i visited his restaurant for the first time, pricey but it was a real treat and a different gourmet experience so no regrets!
I totally enjoyed the dishes:
Smoked chicken and foie gras terrine with lentils and truffle vinaigrette, wonderful texture, unusual flavours, typical Le Gavroche style 4/5. Braised beef in red wine and creamed potatoes, absolutely yummy, quite a large portion too, meat very tender, falling apart and tasty. 3/4
Inn the Park:
Tried two dishes; organic salmon and fishcakes. The organic salmon was served with asparagus and toast, fantastic dish, very refreshing and tasty. Salmon was cooked perfectly 3/5 . Fishcakes were lovely! Each was made with different fish and ingredients; smoked haddock and leek, pollock and Morecambe bay shrimp, crab and spring onion, all served with tomato and caper vinaigrette. Yummy 4/5
Griddled scallops with pea puree and mint vinaigrette. Lovely presentation and so tasty, scallop was cooked to perfection. The downside was the size of the dish; 1 scallop for 10 Crowns :/ 3/5 The second dish was a delicious pie; braised veal with mushroom and potato mash in delicious gravy. 4/5
I wasn’t interested in their menu, it was boring, but my partner wanted to try their white tomato soup; i tasted it too, but my stomach did not like it, it was a raw tomato soup. Yuck! I don’t think this is something you would expect from the Michelin star restaurant. 1/5
Another dish where i wasted my Crowns. Lobster salad – A small chunk of a sad plain overcooked lobster served with plain salad leaves. What was i thinking! Boo! 1/5
Very impressive, Seabass [ one of my fav fish] was served as dumplings in spinach wrap and with Yuzu sauce. Excellent! 4/5. The other dish was special wagyu beef served on hot rocks, this is one of their signature dishes. Lovely presented but not much flavour going on. 3/5
One o One:
We frequently visited this restaurant in the past so some of the staff got to know us. We met some of them at the Taste, they did not want to charge us for these delicious dishes ( which was a pleasant surprise!), we had extra Crowns left for more goodies! At the time this was my favorite fish restaurant in the whole London. I visited the restaurant again in 2010 and i have to say lots of things have changed, all their old staff including the Maitre D’ are were gone. It felt like i we were there for the first time, the new staff were polite but dry. Hardly anyone would smile. We haven’t visited in the past 2 years, would love to go again and see if the service improved.
We tried two dishes;
Cancale Tsarkaya oyster with Ozen quail egg, apple salsa and wasabi flying fish caviar. Not for everyones taste buds that’s for sure, it was unusual, i am crazy about oysters but the quail egg was new to me, also there was too much mushy squishy in the mouth :D, but it wasn’t bad, it was OK and i liked the unusual combination. At the time, back in 2007 i only just started exploring new tastes and textures, i am sure now i would have a completely different opinion about a dish like this! 3/5
Pannacota of Pain d’epice and summer strawberry pettite meringue; light and tasty, not too sweet, perfect for summer evening. Totally enjoyed it. Not too sweet, which always has a plus in my book! 4/5
Ham hock terrine with walnut toast. Rather dry and fatty ham, and thin slice of dry walnut bread with watery mustard sauce. No-no 2/5
Lovely combination of plain ingredients: Somen noodles with shrimp, shitake mushrooms, myoga, cucumber and ginger. All cooked perfectly, lovely refreshing exotic taste. This went well with a glass of bubbly 3/5
This is my kind of food, and it was fantastic. I had Seabass dumplings 4/5 and Venison puff 4/5. Original menu was showing Scallop shumai instead of the seabass but for some reason they changed it in the last moment. Pastry was soft and flaky, great texture, yummy filling!
Mmmm these were delicious!
Raviolo al Granchino e Mascarpone ai Crostacei – Crab, saffron and mascarpone ravioli with shellfish bisque! Tastebuds going wild! At first i was concerned as it was rather unattractive looking dish but because i am a seafood lover i had to try and i am so glad i did! 4/5
Mare e Terra – BBQ Marinated lamb and king prawns; lamb chop and prawns, nothing more nothing less 3/5
