Couple of years ago we went to Bradford for the “Infest” festival of pure industrial music! This festival has been going on since the late 90s but only this year i managed to go for the first time. The bands line-up was the best so far and i couldn’t have chosen a better year to go!
Anyway back to food and some reviews…
We chose Jurys Inn as it was a 5 min walk to the festival venue, also the hotel opened the year before so it is fairly new. I expect some luxury and comfort when i am away from home.
The check-in was fast , but the receptionist looked bored and hardly exchanged any words with us. At the time of the booking we selected option to have the room on the lower floor but we got the top floor instead – 7th floor. We didn’t complain, we were tired and just wanted to get to the room asap.
I checked the reviews for this hotel before we made a booking and i was expecting the room to be spacious as advertised and it was. Nothing to go wild about but i was happy as there was lots of space to move around. Most of the hotel rooms make me feel claustrophobic!
A small hallway leading into the bathroom, double bed, air conditioner setting on the wall as shown on the picture above, small reading bed lights, telephone, one full length mirror just below the light shown on the above picture, another medium size mirror on the opposite wall and one large mirror in the bathroom. I guess lots of ladies would be pleased with this I certainly was!
Clean and modern bathroom, but no shelves to place cosmetics and bathroom goodies. There is only one set of towels placed in the bathroom, one large towel and one hand towel, the second set you can find in the wardrobe. This should have been explained at the reception or given information leaflet.
Another big minus in my opinion are the handwash, shampoo and bodywash gel; You can see them on the picture above, they are not complimentary as you would normally get small soaps or mini shampoo / bodywash bottles, these are attached to the wall and what they do just refill them for the new guests. Luckily, i had my own shampoo and shower gel so i did not need to use it. This refill thing they practice is very much non-hygienic, anyone can put anything inside and not to mention that hundreds of previous guests touched the pump… So you get the picture!
Shower was perfect, the only downside is that you need to wait for a couple of minutes for hot water to come on.
There is a long narrow table opposite the bed with one chair and one armchair next to the window. There is also an open wardrobe to hang your clothes.
Please note the image on the Jurys Inn Bradford website shows sofa in the room, this is their stock photo and we were told none of their rooms in this hotel have sofa.
There is a large window with heavy curtains so it keeps room dark in the mornings! We had a room at the back of the hotel so it was away from the main street and noise. Not really a room with the view but i did not come to enjoy the scenery 😉
You get Kenco decaff and Smooth, Twinings English tea, brown and white sugar, sweeteners and 4x semi-skimmed milk mini pots, two cups and two spoons. Cups and spoons properly clean
There is a 24 hour room service advertised on their website but we learnt it closes at 4am. Also, on our second day we wanted to place an order at about 2am and the kitchen was already closed so went to bed disappointed and hungry! On the first night we ordered a few things from the Night menu, which is extremely limited with choices;
I got a soup of the day which was leek and mushroom from what i could taste. It was very light and tasty but instead of crusty roll i got a slice of soft white bread.
We also had ham and cheese pizza, the dough was fantastic, and cheese very tasty! I love when the cheese is just melted but not burnt!
Like this was not enough, we also got some panini: Tuna cheese melt;
and Ham and cheese panini served with some salad and doritos. Panini were not the real panini, this was some sort of ciabatta, and toasted it turned out to be really hard. And what i really dislike is salad served without dressing.
The next morning we woke up very late and got a brunch. My boy ordered a full breakfast – double up and portion of chips and cheese and i opted for fried eggs with toast.
The breakfast was: 1 sausage, 2 slices of bacon, 2 hash browns, 1 half of grilled tomato, tiny portion of baked beans and one egg. We were expecting double up as an extra large meal double in size, they served it as two separate portions….
They served about 6-7 slices of brown toast with the breakfast. We also got an orange juice but i was disappointed it wasn’t freshly squeezed. Hot chocolate was fantastic on the first day, very rich, but the next morning when i ordered the same i got something really disgusting, the drink was watery and had a smell and taste of a cleaning liquid!!!? I almost vomited when i had a sip so we returned it and requested a new one, and they sent the very same whatever that was, but certainly not a hot chocolate. I am not sure what went wrong, was it different staff who made it the first time, maybe cups weren’t properly washed this time…I didn’t return the drink because i am sure they would have brought another one tasting exactly the same. I simply didn’t drink.
The next morning we ordered similar breakfast, this time they served English double up as one large portion, instead of two separate ones:
The soup was served with a crusty roll:
During our stay we never went to the restaurant for breakfast or dinner, we stayed in bed late and hang a card on the door not to be disturbed. But unfortunately our room was right next to the storage room so the noise would wake us up as the staff would take things out of the cupboard every 5 minutes while preparing for the hotel cleaning. In the afternoon the staff would bring some extra tea/coffee goodies and set of towels, but just for one person! They don’t knock on the door, just put little note under the door and leave the towels outside on the floor ( with a plastic bag underneath)
